Hi, Everyone!
Many thanks to Susan for setting up this blog which I think will become a valuable resource to keep everyone "in the loop." As a part-time adjunct working another full-time job, it's difficult to attend the meetings and get-togethers so I hope to be able to exchange ideas and suggestions with you all via this forum. FYI, we're going into a potentially difficult year here at Bristol Community College with virtually no experienced staffers returning and no one in place to take over the editor's slot. I may need all the help I can get! Looking forward to blogging with you in the days and weeks ahead ...

Hello Kenneth,
I feel a kinship here...since our newspapers share the same name!
I know how you feel about a new staff. I also have a new editor and graphic designer. All of our regular staff writers graduated last year so we are really stating anew.
I've been lucky in some respects. The new editor lives close by and was anxious to learn the job before the semester started so she was willing to meet me in the newsroom for some basic training in August.
I think this is the nature of the community college. Students come, they go, and we are never guaranteed any kind of continuity, which makes our job harder because we are usually always dealing with a new staff.
I find that people within the college have to be continually educated about this. They expect that the newspaper will take giant leaps and keep improving and they can't figure out why the paper might take a step backwards one semester. I think people forget sometimes that almost every year, a new, untrained staff is putting out that first edition.
Is your paper online at all? If not, do you have any plans to do so?
